Buyer Beware: Predatory Marketers
A while back I was waiting is a coffee shop to meet with one of my clients. I could overhear another marketing company in the background talking to one of their potential clients. I’m always put off by the promises these companies keep making. “We can get you on number 1 in Google” or “You’ll get continuous leads that will turn into sales. It’s really simple and will only cost you mucho bucks.” Ok, they didn’t actually say mucho bucks. But you get the point.
Now, maybe they can get this business to number 1 for that specific keyword. But can they stay there? You’re website ranking and position are constantly changing and in flux. It’s very costly and difficult to remain at that top spot for an extended period of time. Not to mention, can they rank your site for a keyword that you’d want to be ranked for?
For most business owners, getting to and staying number 1 in a market can be too costly or difficult.
Personally, I don’t really trust companies that can guarantee the top spot so quickly. Marketing today has changed. Getting to the top spot requires tackling this problem with a variety of tactics.
I had a client who was very excited about one of these schemes and he spent $3000 a month to become the number one spot on Google. He was promised 10,000 hits a month to his website. Which he got, but he didn’t even get a single sale. None. Why? After taking a look at his analytics I discovered that many of these hits were coming from overseas. That’s fine. If you’re a business that can support that. He made one-of-a-kind custom furniture from hardwoods. Not exactly the kind of thing you can drop off at the post office and ship. His bounce rate was crazy high and many left the site after 2 seconds.
He was in a six-month contract that ended up costing him $18,000. I’m always a little suspicious when I hear these stories and it really makes my job that much harder.
